iFi Audio today officially released its reference-class flagship headphone amplifier iCAN PHANTOM 1.5, a comprehensive upgrade to the previous PHANTOM series. The new model is positioned as a "multi-function all-in-one" device, designed to handle a wide range of audio equipment from high-sensitivity in-ear monitors to the most difficult-to-drive planar magnetic and electrostatic headphones.[1]

As the flagship model of iFi Audio, the iCAN PHANTOM 1.5 does not completely overturn the previous design, but introduces several key improvements on the classic architecture. The company states that the new product is built for audiophiles who pursue ultimate sound quality, emphasizing "reference-class" sound performance and driver compatibility, covering the most demanding use scenarios in personal audio systems.[1]

Although the official full technical specifications have not been announced yet, it is known that the iCAN PHANTOM 1.5 retains the previous generation's iconic balanced circuit and multiple gain modes. Its core highlight is the ability to simultaneously adapt to IEMs and electrostatic headphones, meaning users do not need to purchase an additional electrostatic amplifier; a single device can handle the entire chain from desktop to flagship headphones.[1]

In terms of specific specifications, the new product is expected to continue iFi's consistent high signal-to-noise ratio and low distortion design, and may have optimized the power supply section or output stage circuit based on the previous generation. The price and release date are not yet clear, but referring to the past positioning of the PHANTOM series, its price will likely still fall in the flagship range.[1]

The biggest highlight of the iCAN PHANTOM 1.5 is its "one-size-fits-all" compatibility: it can drive low-impedance high-sensitivity in-ear headphones (avoiding background noise), provide sufficient current to drive planar magnetic headphones, and even has a built-in electrostatic headphone amplification module, eliminating the cost and space of purchasing an additional electrostatic amplifier. This level of integration is relatively rare among competitors at the same price point.[1]

From an editor's perspective, the iCAN PHANTOM 1.5 is best suited for seasoned audiophiles who own multiple different types of flagship headphones (especially electrostatic + planar). Compared with pure headphone amplifiers or separate systems at the same price point, its advantages are integration and convenience; however, if pursuing ultimate pure sound quality or upgradability, a separate system may have more potential. Whether it's worth it depends on whether the user needs a "one-device-does-it-all" simplified solution – if the main headphones are electrostatic and you don't want to deal with complexity, this product is worth waiting for a detailed review.[1]
