A headphone amplifier, or "headphone amp" for short, is an audio device specifically designed to drive headphones. Its core task is to amplify the weak audio signals output by front-end devices such as smartphones, players, or computers to a power level sufficient to make the headphone diaphragms vibrate fully. In simple terms, headphones are the "speakers," and the headphone amp is the "engine," responsible for providing enough current and voltage to let the headphones "eat their fill" and work properly.

For sound quality, the significance of a headphone amp lies in "control" and "headroom." When driving power is insufficient, the headphone sound can become weak and muffled, with loose bass and compressed dynamics; a qualified headphone amp can make the sound imaging clearer, the soundstage wider, and the transient response snappier. When choosing one, more expensive is not necessarily better—the key is to consider the headphone's impedance and sensitivity. High-impedance or low-sensitivity headphones (such as planar magnetic or dynamic over-ear models) often require a dedicated headphone amp, while high-sensitivity in-ear monitors may actually pick up background noise when connected to an amp.

Practical advice: First determine whether your headphones are "hard to drive." If the volume is turned up high on direct connection but the sound still feels "lifeless," then consider adding a headphone amp. When the budget is limited, prioritize upgrading the headphones themselves—a headphone amp is "the icing on the cake," not "a lifeline in times of need."
