A DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter) in the headphone/audio field refers to a "digital-to-analog converter." Its core task is to convert the digital audio signals from a phone, computer, or player—strings of 0s and 1s—into analog electrical signals that human ears can hear, thereby driving headphones to produce sound. In simple terms, it acts as the "translator" between the digital world and physical sound.

The quality of the DAC directly affects sound reproduction accuracy. The conversion chips built into entry-level devices are often "adequate but coarse," which can result in muffled sound, blurred details, and an unclean background. A good standalone DAC, on the other hand, delivers lower distortion, a wider dynamic range, and more precise soundstage positioning, allowing you to hear subtle details in recordings that are otherwise masked—such as breaths and instrumental overtones—for a more "Hi-Fi" immersive experience.

When purchasing, there's no need to blindly chase high prices or excessive specifications. It's advisable to first clarify your audio source (e.g., streaming, lossless files) and headphone impedance, then choose a DAC accordingly.
