Planar magnetic drivers are a type of headphone transducer that uses electromagnetic induction to drive a diaphragm to produce sound. Unlike dynamic drivers, which rely on a voice coil to push a cone-shaped diaphragm, planar magnetic drivers use an ultra-thin, flat diaphragm with printed circuits, on which conductors are evenly distributed and placed within a strong magnetic field. When an audio current passes through the conductors, the entire diaphragm experiences force and vibrates back and forth like a "planar piston," which is why it is also referred to as an "isodynamic" or "orthodynamic" driver.

The most direct impact of this design on sound is extremely low distortion and exceptionally fast transient response. Because the force on the diaphragm is evenly distributed, split vibration is greatly reduced, resulting in rich detail and layering in the sound, particularly excelling at reproducing instrumental overtones and spatial imaging. When purchasing, planar magnetic headphones typically sound more neutral and have higher resolution, but they tend to be heavier and harder to drive, requiring a high-power amplifier to perform at their best. They are not suitable for direct connection to portable devices or on-the-go use.

If you seek ultimate resolution and low distortion and already have sufficient amplification, planar magnetic headphones are worth considering. However, if your primary use is commuting and portability, it is advisable to prioritize dynamic or hybrid drivers to avoid wasting their performance due to insufficient driving power.
